What is phonics and why is it important?

Phonics is a very effective way of teaching children how to read. Children are taught the sounds that individual letters make and the sounds that groups of letters make. They then learn how to blend these sounds together to make words and can use their phonics knowledge to decode words that they see or hear.

What phonics phase activity cards should I purchase?

Phase 2 - Introduced in Preschool and taught in Reception

Phase 3 - Taught in Reception

Phase 4 - Taught in Reception and/or Year 1

Phase 5 - Taught in Year 1

Why have our phonics cards been split into phases?

In most schools, phonics is taught in phases. Each phase contains different sounds. Your child will be introduced to their first letter sounds in preschool/nursery, these are then revisited and solidified in reception. In reception children are also taught phase 3 sounds and phase 4 (depending ont he chosen phonics scheme). In year 1 phase 4 sounds are usually solidified and children are taught phase 5 sounds. Towards the end of year 1 children complete a phonics screening test. This test is to ensure that they have retained and can apply all of the phonics knowledge that they have learnt.
